Area Code

Also known as: NPA, dialing code

An area code is the three-digit prefix of a North American phone number that identifies its geographic region, used to give a tracking number local presence in a target market.

An area code is the first three digits of a 10-digit North American phone number (formally the Numbering Plan Area, or NPA). It maps a number to a geographic region: 212 to Manhattan, 305 to Miami, 312 to Chicago. In call tracking, the area code is how you give a local number the right local presence for the market you’re advertising in.

Platforms let you search for and provision numbers by area code so each campaign’s number matches its target region. See call tracking numbers for how provisioning works.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a tracking number in any area code?

In most cases yes, you can search available numbers by area code and claim one that matches your target metro, then assign it to a campaign like any other tracking number. If no local inventory is available, a nearby area code or a toll-free number is the usual fallback.

Why does the area code matter for response rates?

Callers are more likely to trust and dial a number that looks local to them. A caller in Dallas is more comfortable with a 214 or 469 number than an out-of-state one, so matching the area code to your target market can improve answer and call-back rates.
