Number Porting
Also known as: porting, LNP, phone number transfer
Number porting is the process of moving an existing phone number from one carrier or provider to another so you keep the number while changing service.
Number porting transfers ownership of a phone number between providers, letting a business switch services without printing new numbers or losing the equity in a number customers already know. It is governed by carrier rules and can take anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks depending on the number type.
In call tracking, porting matters when you want to bring an established line (say, a long-running toll-free number) under tracking without disruption.
Frequently asked questions
Can you port a number into a call tracking platform?
Usually yes. An existing business or marketing number can often be ported in so it keeps working while gaining tracking, recording, and routing. Porting timelines vary by carrier and number type, and the number must stay active during the transfer.
